Su Tomesen is a visual artist based in Amsterdam and Jogjakarta. In 2007 she obtained her MA in Fine Art at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam. Her work consists of videos, photographs and installations and she travels a lot. She was artist-in-residence in Belgrade, Amman and Johannesburg, and worked for an international video project in Port-au-Prince, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. The work evolves from curiosity and observing situations. Her background –educated as a historian and working as a director for television– is integrated in her work. By researching contexts she gets triggered and informs herself about urgent topics. The outcome of research leads to site-specific works. In 2011 she realized the installation Palm Tree in a multicultural area in Amsterdam. The works and experiences from abroad she brings to the Netherlands and vice versa: “Sometimes I feel like an ambassador, I show works from South Africa in Yerevan or a video I shot in Cuba in Jogja.” In 2011-2012 she participated in exhibitions as ‘Selametan Digital’ in Jogjakarta, at EYE Filminstitute in Amsterdam, Toronto Urban Film Festival and she had a solo with the Indonesian artist Teguh Hartanto in De Aanschouw in Rotterdam and Erasmushuis in Jakarta.
